WLKY News: New St. Matthews clinic offers new treatment option for depression sufferers

SAINT MATTHEWS, Ky. —

A new mental health center officially opened its doors in St. Matthews Wednesday. The clinic is called Serenity Health and it provides options for patients whose depression has resisted most other treatments.

The center is one of the only facilities in the area specializing in ketamine infusion therapy for the treatment of mental health and pain. Ketamine has been around since the early 60’s and was primarily used for anesthesia — that is until some unexpected findings in the late 80’s led to a new use for the drug.

“There were patients that started asking their surgeons, like hey what did you guys do to me while I was under surgery?” said owner Kit Afable. “I feel better as far as my depression symptoms.”

Since then, further studies have shown ketamine greatly reduces suicidal thoughts and other serious symptoms of depression. Some clinical trials put the success rate at almost 80 percent.

Serenity also offers Spravato, which is a nasal spray derived from ketamine that has similar benefits.

The clinic also uses ketamine to treat other conditions like obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder and for pain management alternatives.
